A blindfolded man stands cuffed in a bare stone courtyard while a line of uniformed riflemen takes aim, and in the foreground a crowd of ordinary people in coats and hats stands quietly watching, a small boy among them near the front.
Attendance was strong. People came in from the surrounding blocks, arrived early enough to get a decent position, and stood through the whole thing without anybody having to tell them to. Nobody in that front row is studying the paving stones or checking a pocket watch. They came to see it, and they are seeing it, and afterward they will walk home and have their supper.
Everyone says they would look away. Turnout says otherwise.
